  • Northwoods Sterwardship CenterThe NorthWoods Stewardship Center is a non-profit organization that provides high-quality scientific, educational and conservation service programs in northeastern Vermont.
NorthWoods’ mission is connecting human and natural communities through education and action. This is achieved through the integration of its five program areas: land management, conservation science, education, outdoor recreation, and conservation service. It is the synergy of these programs that helps create responsible and informed citizens capable of sustaining vibrant communities and a healthier natural environment.
From its modest beginnings as a small local educational organization, NorthWoods has grown into a diverse institution working to protect the landscape through education and action via a range of projects with regional impacts.
The Center was founded in 1989 by William C. Manning as an environmental education and youth leadership development project and attained non-profit 501(c)(3) status in 1995. A youth conservation service program was initiated in 1995, and land management and research programs were added in 1996. Now, a decade later, these programs reach 85% of the schools in the region, employ 60 youth in over 12,000 hours of conservation service work each summer, provide ecological monitoring and research in the region’s forests and watersheds, and teach landowners how to employ more sustainable forest management practices.NorthwoodsCenter.org
